World Youth Chess Championships

Anna Wang is currently representing England in the World Girls' Under-10 Championship in Turkey. The 11-round event began on Thursday 12 November. After three rounds, Anna was on 100%, including a win against the Russian girl who won the European Girls' U-10 Championship in September. You can follow the event on the official website (http://wycc2009.tsf.org.tr/). Alternatively, you can see regular updates on Anna's progress on the 'News and Events' page of the Cowley Chess Club website at

Sat 9 Jan - U11 trials and Oxon Champs

The trials for the Oxfordshire under-11 team to play in the EPSCA inter-county championships will take place at Magdalen College School on Saturday 9 January. Entry is restricted to players either living or attending school in Oxfordshire, and born on or before 31 August 1998.

We are looking for a team of 24 to play in the zonal round (Sat 20 March) and hopefully the final (Sat 8 May).

This event is also the U11 County Championships. More details are on the entry form; entries close on Mon 27 Dec, which means that you need to post the form before Christmas.

PETER WELLS EVENINGS

As most of you will hopefully know by now, Witney Chess Club have engaged Peter Wells to hold two sessions at Ducklington village hall on 23 November (simultaneous display) and 7 December (presentation of a selection of Peter's best games). These evenings are open to all Oxfordshire players, and we are very much hoping that they will be well attended such that further such evenings can be arranged in 2010.

In order to encourage early booking so that we can get an idea of likely numbers we are proposing the following prices:

1. Both evenings booked by 31 October: £10.00.
2. Individual evenings booked before 31 October: £6.00.
3. Bookings after 31 October and on the night: £7.50 per evening.

Light refreshments (coffee, tea etc) will be included in the price.

If you would like to attend, please make cheques payable to "Witney Chess Club" and send them to me at The Old Farmhouse, 7 Church Street, Ducklington, Witney, Oxon OX29 7UA. For the first evening (simultaneous display) Peter has asked that numbers be limited to 30, and so we will need to accept bookings for this evening on a first come first served basis. For the second evening (games analysis) we will be able to accommodate greater numbers in our spacious new venue!

We would be very grateful if you could publicise these evenings within your various chess clubs - as well, of course, as attending yourselves!

If you have ideas on the content of the further evenings that we are hoping to hold in 2010 (interest permitting of course) we would be glad to hear from you.

Kind regards
 Mike Truran

CumnorChessClub News

Local resident Bill Laar has offered to purchase the trophies for our new Intermediates tournament. Bill has also kindly offered to pay for the ‘keep sake’ trophies for this tournament over the next five years. This is a very generous offer, of which Cumnor Chess Club is most grateful. Bill’s link with the club goes right back to it’s humble beginnings in October 2001. His son Alex was one of the initial members during the club’s first six months. However, since then Bill has always held a keen interest in the progress of the club, and whenever I have bumped into him Bill has always enquired about the club’s progress. I therefore think it would be appropriate to re-name this tournament The Bill Laar Trophy.
